No longer do you know where to put all those metres of hose you use every day to water your garden or the plants on the terrace? This tutorial will show you step by step how to make a do-it-yourself planter hose reel: to have a comfortable hose reel and a decorative and original planter at the same time! You can insert the tube inside it and you will also have space for accessories.
Read on to find out how you can make it yourself.
If you like furniture with a dual function, you’ll love this project. Its main function is to store an irrigation pipe inside thanks to its crank system. In addition, the upper part is a planter that will give a touch of color and cheerfulness to your terrace or garden. To find out how to make it, all you have to do is follow the instructions below.
Tools and materials
To make a hose reel for irrigation pipes you will need the following tools and materials:
- Drill / screwdriver
- Hole cutter
- Flat tip for wood
- Jigsaw saw
- Axes, strips and MDF board with the following sizes:
- 5 axes with measures 2400x680x21 mm
- Listello with measures 2400x32x32 mm
- Stick with measures 1000 × 19 mm and another of 1000 × 27 mm
- MDF table with measures 1200x600x3 mm
- Wood screws
- Sand paper
- White glue
Cost, duration and difficulty
We classified this project with a medium difficulty level, as it requires some practice in using different tools.
The approximate cost of the materials is about 40 €, although it could be lower if, for example, you choose to use pine boards, for example.
The time for implementation will be about a day’s work, although it may vary depending on your level of experience in DIY.
Hose reel planter DIY step by step
This Hose Reel not only has a practical function, but also a decorative one. You can use it to store the irrigation hose and accessories as well as as a planter. The steps to follow to build it are explained below.
Cutting the pieces
First of all, let’s cut all the pieces that will make up the central structure of the Hose Reel. To do this we have used a cut-off machine, for its speed and precision, but it is also possible to use a saw. The pieces we will need are:
- 36 axes with dimensions 40×6.8×2.1 cm
- 4 axes with size 40×3.2×3.2 cm
Mount the external part
Once we cut the pieces, we mount the outside of our Hose Reel. We start the sides of the axes with size 40×6.8×2.1 cm to those with length 40 cm. In the next image you can see the result:
System to wrap the tube
The next step will be to create a system that allows you to roll up the pipe and then easily collect and extract it.
Hole to extract the pipe
First of all, we make a hole with a cup bur, both in the front and in the back. The diameter of the cup cutter must be sufficient to allow the tube and connector to be inserted.
In this way, from the front hole we can extract the pipe that we will connect to the gun or sprayer, while from the rear one the part of the pipe connected to the tap.
Axle and crank
With a stick and a wooden board we will build the board and the crank to be able to wrap the tube. The steps to follow are:
- Cut a 45×1.9 cm stick and another 3×2.7 cm stick. Join the one with a diameter of 2.7 cm to one of the ends of the one with a diameter of 1.9 cm using white glue.
- With a flat tip for wood of the same diameter as the stick, make a hole on each of the sides not yet drilled with the cup cutter.
- Sand the holes to remove the splinters.
- With the flat tip, start drilling an axis measuring 15×3.2×3.2 cm without drilling it completely.
- Insert the axis in both holes and conclude with the piece 15 cm that will serve as a crank and that we will fix with white glue
Position the bottom
To finish the Hose Reel, we cut an MDF board with a size of 40×44 cm which in turn, cut the corners with a hacksaw. Then, we fix it to the bottom of our structure using the nailer. In this way, our hose reel will also serve as a container for irrigation accessories.
Upper part and planter
The next step is to build the upper part that we will use as a planter. We start by fixing 4 axes measuring 30×6.8×2.1 cm in the form of a drawer, to which we nail an MDF bottom.
To ensure that it fits perfectly and does not move from the structure of our Hose Reel, we also start 4 axes at the top, as indicated in the photos below.
Protecting and colouring wood
The last phase is the protection and colouring of the wood with the impregnating agent. This type of finish allows the wood to breathe and regulate its internal humidity, making it perfect for outdoor furniture.
To give it a more decorative touch, we have chosen to use two shades:
- Dark for top, crank and feet
- Clear for the rest
In about half an hour it will be dry and we can start using this practical and decorative hose reel.
All that remains is to secure the tube to the axis with clamps and start turning the crank.
After wrapping a 10 meter hose, there is still room inside for storing accessories. Did you already know this practical and decorative way of keeping the hose and all its accessories tidy?
